  We are exploring a recount writing unit inspired by the text Seal Surfer. Through drama, role play, creative writing and rich vocabulary work, we will explore the story about a boy with a disability, who forms a special bond with a wild seal. We will develop our skills in grouping ideas into paragraphs, use prepositions to express time, place and cause and use inverted commas to punctuate speech. The children will plan and write their own letter as though they are the boy in ‘Seal Surfer’ to his friend.

  Place Value to 1,000: We will build on children’s understanding of 2-digit numbers. Children will begin learning how to count in 100s, they will learn that a 3 digit number is made up of 100s, 10s and 1s and they will be able to represent this in many different ways.

  Addition and Subtraction: Children will explore additions and subtractions gradually, beginning with adding and subtracting 1s until by the end of the unit they are adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers.

  My Healthy Self: How can I care for my body and mind?

  This half term, pupils will explore the connection between physical and emotional wellbeing. They will learn to recognise and describe a range of emotions, identify habits that support healthy sleep and understand how bullying can affect wellbeing. Pupils will also learn when and where to seek help and support.

  What do Hindus believe God is like?

  Pupils will be introduced to Hindu Dharma. They will act as philosophers considering how Hindus might see the world. Pupils will look at the concepts of Brahman to build up their understanding. They will use stories and consider how deities exemplify qualities of Brahman.

  The children will compare and group together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties. They will describe in simple terms how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock. Pupils will learn that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.

  In Year 3 History, children will learn about life in the Stone Age, Iron Age, and important local historical sites. They will explore how people lived in the past and compare it with life today. Pupils will develop a clear sense of chronology and learn key terms like hunter-gatherer, settlement, and archaeologist. They will also find out how historians use different sources, such as artefacts and ancient sites like Stonehenge and Skara Brae, to understand the past. Through enquiry and discussion, children will build knowledge, make connections over time, and gain a deeper appreciation of history.

  Year 3 are developing their skills in running, jumping and throwing this half term. They’ll explore the difference between sprinting and distance running, learn how to pass a baton in a relay, and begin to use correct techniques in events like javelin and long jump. They’ll also start thinking about how to pace themselves and aim for personal bests.

  Drawing: Developing Drawing Skills

  This half term, pupils will develop their observational drawing skills through the work of artist Yellena James. They will explore shape, line, pattern and texture, using different marks and shading techniques to create light, dark and detail. Pupils will plan drawings using simple shapes, experiment with digital drawing tools and create their own artwork inspired by The Sun.

  This half term, Year 3 are learning how to create dance sequences with structure and style. They’ll practise modern dance moves, explore different formations (like circles or zig-zags), and perform routines with a clear beginning and end. They’ll also begin to reflect on how they can improve their performances.

  This term, children will deepen their understanding of key musical concepts such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, and dynamics. They’ll learn to sing with control, perform with instruments, and begin to read and write simple rhythms using musical notation. Children will also explore how different instruments create sound and how music can be used to tell a story or create a mood. They’ll take part in call-and-response songs, compose their own rhythms, and perform in small groups. Listening to a variety of music will help them develop their own preferences and musical vocabulary.

  Online Safety and Email

  This half term, pupils will explore self-image, identity and online reputation through Purple Mash’s 2BeSafe activities. They will consider how people present themselves online and learn how to protect their digital identity and reputation. Pupils will also develop their email skills, including composing, sending and replying to messages safely and appropriately.

  This half term, children will learn how to introduce themselves in Spanish. They’ll practise asking and answering questions about their name, age, and where they live. They’ll also work on forming full sentences and taking part in simple conversations, building confidence in both speaking and writing.
