Vision:

At Parochial, we are committed to delivering a mathematics curriculum that is engaging, inclusive, and ambitious for all learners. Our approach is grounded in the belief that every child can achieve mathematical success through a deep understanding of concepts, rather than rote memorization. We utilize the Power Maths programme, a mastery-based curriculum developed in partnership with White Rose Maths and recommended by the  Department for Education .

Power Maths is designed to spark curiosity and excitement, helping to nurture confidence in mathematics. It employs a child-centred lesson design that models and embeds a growth mindset approach, encouraging children to see mistakes as learning opportunities and to persevere through challenges .

    Educating for Dignity and Respect through Maths

    We believe that every child can achieve in maths, and our teaching reflects this commitment. Mixed-ability learning encourages pupils to respect each other’s ideas, celebrate strengths, and support each other’s learning.

    Through the CPA approach, children explore multiple methods for solving problems, developing flexibility, creativity, and confidence.

    Celebrations of effort, perseverance, and achievement—such as our weekly celebration assemblies—reinforce the value of learning from mistakes and striving for personal bests.

    Educating for Hope and Aspiration through Maths

    We aim to build confident, resilient learners who believe they can succeed in mathematics. Our curriculum challenges all learners, including those working at greater depth, through problem-solving, reasoning, and opportunities to explain and justify their thinking.

    Pupils are encouraged to:

    • Compete in Sumdog competitions

    • Earn in-school maths badges for times tables, mental maths, and problem-solving skills

    • Take part in challenges that develop their mathematical fluency and reasoning

    Partner work, discussion, and sharing strategies are embedded in our lessons to build communication, confidence, and a love of learning.

    Educating for Wisdom, Knowledge and Skills through Maths

    Our maths curriculum follows the Power Maths programme, a mastery approach built on the principles of:

    • A coherent, cumulative, spiral curriculum, ensuring knowledge builds progressively over time

    • A lesson design that nurtures a growth mindset, encouraging children to see mistakes as learning opportunities

    • A consistent structure in every lesson:

      • Power Up: Recap prior learning and build fluency

      • Discover & Share: Introduce new concepts through problem-solving

      • Think Together: Guided practice with increasing independence

      • Practice: Independent tasks with carefully designed questions

      • Reflect: Opportunities to consolidate learning and make connections

    We use the CPA approach (Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract) and bar modelling throughout the curriculum to support conceptual understanding and problem-solving. Teachers supplement learning with White Rose Maths resources for additional practice and challenge.

    Fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving are at the heart of every lesson, ensuring all pupils develop confidence, flexibility, and a secure understanding of mathematical ideas.

  • Educating for Community and Living Well Together through Maths

    Educating for Community and Living Well Together through Maths

    Maths at Parochial is a shared, collaborative experience. Pupils work in mixed-ability pairs and groups, learning to listen to and support each other.

    We promote community and engagement through:

    • Local and national maths competitions, fostering teamwork and friendly competition

    • Bi-annual parent workshops, where families learn about our approach to maths and how they can support their child at home

    Through these experiences, pupils develop a sense of belonging and see themselves as part of a wider learning community.

We follow the Power Maths programme across school, which provides a carefully sequenced approach to developing mathematical understanding through small, manageable steps. Lessons focus on mathematical thinking, discussion, reasoning and problem solving so that children develop secure and lasting understanding.

To support consistency and progression in written methods across the school, we follow a clear set of Calculation Policies. These outline how the four operations are introduced and developed from Early Years through to Year 6, ensuring that children build on prior learning and develop efficient, accurate strategies as they move through the school.

Our Calculation Policies can be viewed below and provide guidance on the methods children use when learning addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

 

Impact:

By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils at Parochial will:

  • Be fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics

  • Have a deep conceptual understanding and be able to apply knowledge flexibly

  • Be confident in reasoning mathematically, using precise mathematical language to explain their thinking

  • Be able to solve problems by applying their knowledge to a variety of contexts

  • Be ready for the challenges of secondary maths, with a secure foundation for future learning

Above all, they will leave Parochial as confident, curious mathematicians, ready to tackle new challenges and continue their mathematical journey.
